“The Reel Lives Project is about understanding the truth through a new lens. It’s enabled young people to distance themselves from their everyday realities enough to realize they have choices, and that against all obstacles and challenges, love wins.”

-- Tavis Smiley, philanthropist, political commentator, and talk show host

Reel Lives

Reel Lives is an intensive documentary filmmaking program built on the premise that more than ever, media is the dominant language of youth—crossing borders, economic boundaries and social strata.

Reel Lives empowers young people from underrepresented communities with a platform to thoughtfully piece together their life stories, reflect on their own personal truths, and be widely heard. Through film camps, production mentorships and community screenings, we seek to bridge the gap between the actions taken by those in positions of power and the effect they have on our next generation.

Remedee launched Reel Lives in 2007 with a group of teens in the gang-infested neighborhood of Altadena, California, where students explored topics ranging from peer pressure to cultural identity to health care.
