Remedee, South LA middle school showcase student-produced film

WHAT: Los Angeles Academy Middle School joined with Remedee – a non-profit organization established to provide youth with the resources and education to create change through media -- to host a screening of a student film from a media production program at the South LA school.

WHAT: A contest. (The winner gets a $100 Best Buy gift card.)

WHEN: Now. (Videos must be completed and uploaded by January 25, 2009).

Using your Flip cameras, make a video that addresses the following purposefully vague question: What do you want people to know about New Orleans?

Feel free to tackle the good, the bad, and/or the ugly. Be as creative as you possibly can. Tell us what you want us (and everybody else) to know.

THE RULES

STEP 1: Visit remedee.org and click on the "Log-In" button in the lower left-hand corner.

STEP 2: Select the "Create New Account" tab.

STEP 3: Select a username, create your personal profile, and click the "Create New Account" button.

We're leaving LAAMS for a few weeks between the end of school and the start of filmmaking day camp. Students have a break from us. Orlando, for one, is sincerely disappointed. So am I. The candidly sweet remarks of middle schoolers are really one of a kind.

Today, the Remedee team handed out a contacts list for each student in the LA Academy Media Literacy Class. With this one sheet of e-mail addresses and staff bios, the students can contact Remedee staff and associates for anything, whether it is professional, educational, or just to catch up. As the class continues their education, in filmmaking and beyond, the hope is that they will benefit not only from the techniques learned, but also from the people met. This is one of the reasons why we often refer to our instructors as “mentors.”
